Summary of ICD-10-CM 2024 Coding Updates


The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the ICD-10-CM 2024 coding updates. These updates include new codes, deleted codes, and revised codes. The updates are effective for discharges occurring from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024 and for patient encounters occurring from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024.

New codes

The 2024 ICD-10-CM updates include 395 new codes. These new codes cover a variety of conditions, including:

  • Infectious and parasitic diseases: Two codes for Acinetobacter baumannii sepsis or the cause of diseases classified elsewhere

  • Neoplasms: 13 codes, including 10 codes for desmoid tumors

  • Mental health and behavioral disorders: Two codes for hoarding disorder

  • Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases: Two codes for hyperkeratosis follicularis

  • Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue: Four codes for acanthosis nigricans

  • Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue: Two codes for myositis ossificans progressiva

  • Diseases of the genitourinary system: Two codes for interstitial cystitis/painful bladder syndrome

  • Complications of pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium: Two codes for postpartum cardiomyopathy

  • Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period: Two codes for neonatal sepsis due to Listeria monocytogenes

  • Mental and behavioral disorders due to psychoactive substance use: Two codes for opioid use disorder in pregnancy

  • Factors influencing health status and contact with health services: Two codes for patient-reported stress disorder

Deleted codes

The 2024 ICD-10-CM updates include 25 deleted codes. These deleted codes are no longer needed because the conditions they represent have been reclassified or removed from the ICD-10-CM classification system.

Revised codes

The 2024 ICD-10-CM updates include 13 revised codes. These revised codes have been updated to reflect new medical knowledge or to improve the accuracy of coding.
