Highlights of ICD-10-CM 2024 Updates

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has released the 2024 ICD-10-CM code updates, which will take effect on October 1, 2023. The updates include 395 new codes, 25 deleted codes, and 13 revised codes.

Here are some of the highlights of the 2024 ICD-10-CM updates:

  • New codes for external causes of morbidity: The biggest change in this year's codes is in Chapter 20: External Causes of Morbidity (V00-Y99). CMS has added 123 new codes to capture more details about accidents and injuries. For example, there are new codes for injuries caused by electric bikes, falls from trampolines, and dog bites.

  • New codes for social determinants of health (SDOH): CMS has added new codes to capture information about SDOH, which are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. These codes can be used to track the impact of SDOH on health outcomes and to develop interventions to improve health equity. For example, there are new codes for homelessness, food insecurity, and lack of access to healthcare.

  • New codes for osteoporosis: CMS has added new codes to capture more information about osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become weak and brittle. For example, there are new codes for osteoporosis fractures and for the use of osteoporosis medications.

Other notable changes in the 2024 ICD-10-CM codes include:

  • New codes for COVID-19 long-term effects

  • New codes for monkeypox

  • New codes for electronic cigarette use-associated lung injury (EVALI)

  • New codes for gender dysphoria

  • New codes for social anxiety disorder

  • New codes for ADHD in adults

Healthcare providers and coders should carefully review the 2024 ICD-10-CM updates to ensure that they are using the correct codes for their patients. CMS has published a number of resources to help providers and coders with the transition, including a code comparison table and a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs).

Here are some tips for healthcare providers and coders to prepare for the 2024 ICD-10-CM updates:

  • Review the code comparison table and the list of FAQs to identify any changes that will impact your practice.

  • Update your coding software and training materials to reflect the new codes.

  • Educate your staff on the new codes and how to use them.

  • Audit your coding practices to ensure that you are using the correct codes for your patients.

The 2024 ICD-10-CM updates are designed to improve the accuracy and completeness of medical coding. By carefully reviewing and implementing the updates, healthcare providers and coders can help to ensure that their patients receive the correct care and reimbursement.
